Denraiji Temple is just off of Kamitsue’s main road. The temple is known for its rock garden, which is thought to be the oldest in Kyushu, dating from at least the Muromachi Period, and perhaps the end the Kamakura Period, though it is not known when the garden was built to its present design. There are actually two gardens, one stretching out five hundred square meters from the front gate, and the other behind the main temple, covering an area of about three hundred fifty square meters.
