In 1898 gold was first mined at the Taio Gold Mine, and the mine remained active for seventy-four years until it was closed in 1972. The mine was at its most productive during the mid-thirties when 2.3 tons of gold was produced annually. In 1983 the mine was opened again as an underground museum, where one can see what conditions were like for the workers from different time periods. In addition to the museum, one can try ones hand at panning for gold, and there is a playground for children. There is also a souvenir shop, restaurant and lodging.
