Ushuku Shrine
A narrow, winding, forest mountain road takes you from Umehibiki Hot Springs Resort to a parking lot near the top of Mt. Karadomari, where the path up to Ushuku Jinja begins. First washing ones hands with water from the sacred well, one begins the ascent up the steep stairway made, with roughly hewn stone steps. The shrine itself is not large, but the surroundings are serene, and give the shrine a feeling of sacredness. Partway up, the stairway is crossed by a concrete path that circles the peak, and connects two overlook decks. One of them has a view of a large part of Oita Prefecture, and on a clear day Mt. Yufu and Mt. Aso can be seen. Only people with stamina, and who can read Japanese, or have a guide who can, should attempt this short but challenging adventure.
