Okuhita has many pristine forests, which have remained mostly untouched by man, and the Kakinotane Virgin Forest is among the most pristine. There are beautiful hiking trails, and one can see where Kyushu’s largest river, the Chikugo, bubbles from the ground and begins its long journey to the ocean. In order to preserve the forest’s nature all visitors must be accompanied by a registered guide, and reservations are required.
