High above the Hita basin, in the highest reaches of Maetsue, sits the Tsubakigahana Highlands. The elevation difference is enough that when there is rain in the valley, it is often snowing here, and people often come here to escape the sometimes sweltering heat of Hita’s summers. The view is spectacular, and on clear days a large part of Oita Prefecture, and parts of neighboring prefectures, can be seen. There is a campground where campsites, and if necessary, all the equipment you need for a weekend of camping, are available for rent.
