Takastuka Atago Jizoson
It is said that in the year 952, local people built a small shrine to house a Jizo statue that had been carved and placed next to a sacred ginkgo tree by a Buddhist monk passing through on a pilgrimage. The ginkgo tree has grown to giant size, and is now over 1300 years old. The shrine has been rebuilt to its present size, and innumerable Jizo statues line the wall between the tree and shrine. Takastuka Atago Jizoson is a mixture of Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple, and shares many feature of both, making it very unusual. It is said that visitors will have their wishes granted, so there is a steady flow of pilgrims.
