Hita station- gateway to the city.

JR Hita station has renovated in 2015 by a famous designer Eiji Mitooka who creates remarkable works especially in train designs.  As forestry is the main industry in Hita, he made full use of cedar lumber in the construction. Inside the station is filled with pleasant smell of cedar,and the exterior is painted in dark grey to express the aspect of historical city. Now this station became one of the spots represents Hita,and quietly but warmly welcomes a lot of tourists. When you get off from the train, you’ll see a unique photo spotin front of the station. It’s the letter of Hita. Stand between “H” and “T”, then you’ll be a part of “HITA.”





Taste an eel (UNAGI) rice-ball in Hita!

Hita is known as a place blessed with plentiful water for a long time, and the clear water produces not only beautiful nature and rich crops, but also good fishery foods. You can enjoy variety of river fish cuisine in Hita, such as eels and Ayu (sweet fish).
There are some good restaurants provide eels, but Itaya is the only one restaurant you can enjoy eel rice-ball! Itaya has more than 160 years of history, and passing down their traditional flavor. Eel and rice are well grilled with special sauce, and the smell easily stimulates your appetite. When you get a little bit hungry while sightseeing, stop by here and takeout this delicious rice-ball! Of course, you can enjoy other dishes besides eel


Jizo will warmly welcome you here in Takatsuka Atago Jizoson


Look at this unique view! More than 2,000 of Jizo is waiting for you in Takatsuka Atago Jizoson. It’s located in Amagase area, about half an hour driving from central Hita. Takatsuka Atago Jizoson is established by high-ranking priest Gyoki over a thousand years ago. It’s combining both temple and shrine style, and it is said Jizo can help you realizing any kind of wishes (but just one wish for each person!), so people come here to pray for passing exams, recovering from illness, etc.
After you walk up stairs and Sando, you’ll find a big bell, main shrine, and thousands of Jizo lining up in order.  You can see each Jizo has different figures. Cute, serious, big, or little ones. This place is also known as Ohyakudo-mairi*, but instead of visiting a hundred times, you can write down your wish on the paper one hundred times and bring it to here!


*Japanese folk religious practice which a person visit and pray at the same shrine or temple for a hundred times



Mameda street, where time flows slowly.

Hita prospered as Tenryo* during the Edo period, and still remaining old buildings and historical places. When you take a walk around Mameda area, you would feel like you’re in ancient Japanese town, hence sometimes Hita is called “little Kyoto.” Wear kimono and Hita geta (Japanese sandals), then go exploring Mameda street!
There are a lot of souvenir shops, and they sell a variety of goods, such as say sauce, sake, chopsticks… Also you’ll find good restaurants, cozy little cafes, and historic sites. No doubt you can enjoy spending time walking, taking picture, and find something new in Mameda!

The cherry tree has 200 years old

There is one cherry tree near Ohara Hachimangu in Tashima Town, Hita City.
The cherry tree has 200 years old, 12 meters high and 2 meters around the trunk.
At the end of March, the branches are full of flowers and attract people.
Because it is also lighted up at night, it will be a romantic atmosphere.
Blooming is faster than normal cherry blossoms so be careful.
Also, Hita City has cherry trees in various places. So, how about trying "※ Hanami" by laying a sheet?

※Hanami means to lay down a sheet under a cherry tree and enjoy cherry blossoms and meals.

Hita Gion Kaikan

Hita City Kumamachi has the Hita Gion Kaikan.  The Yamaboko of the Gion Festival held in the year is displayed.
In the exhibition hall on the 1st floor, 6 mountain hoses with a height of 8 m are exhibited.
Equipment and materials related to the Hita Gion festival are on display on the second floor.
Furthermore, from the stairwell, you can overlook the Yamaboko exhibited on the first floor The opportunity to see the actual Yamaboko in the near future is only Hita Gion Hall excluding the festival.

Taiokinzan

Speaking of sightseeing spots in Nakatsue village in Hita City, it is "Taiokinzan".
Taiokinzan is a gold mine discovered about 100 years ago. Currently closed due to exhaustion of resources, some of the old tunnel can be observed as the underground museum.
You can taste the unique atmosphere and history of the mine.
Within the facility, you can experience gold digging and it is popular with tourists.
